Kayquit used to be a single barangay. However, in 1990, residents of the southern and northern portion of the Barangay filed a petition to become separate barangays. By virtue of Sangguniang Panlalawigan Ordinance No. 23-1990 approved on November 15, 1990, Kayquit was divided into three: Kayquit I, the mother barangay located at the middle and the daughter barangays Kayquit II and Kayquit III located on the northern and southern parts of the mother barangay, respectively.
Barangay Kayquit I is bounded on the north by Barangay Kayquit II, on the south by Barangay Kayquit III, on the east by Barangay Buna Cerca, and on the west by Barangay Kaytambog and Carasuchi. It is primarily classified as rural with a total land area of 309 hectares.
